Installing user certificates in your Mumble client. "Server connection failed: The remote host closed the connection."
Apparently there is/was an issue with some older version of Mumble client (pre 1.2.7 IMO) when installed in conjunction with skype.
The solution? Uninstall skype, update mumble to the current version and remove all garbage entries of "Trusted Root Certificates" that mumble (or skype) created due to a bug.
Go START -> Run "mmc", then "Add/Remove Snap-in". Add "Certificates" for "Local Computer". Open the newly created MMC-view and delete all lines containing "localhost" as the certificate authorities name. Try again if mumble connections work now; if yes, you can try reinstalling skype and maybe it won't fuck up this time around.. but if/when it does again, you now know what to do about it.
If the above wasn't a problem for you and it still doesn't work, remember to only use user certificates issued from a Certificate Authority, that is trusted by Windows (and thus trusted by any defaultish mumble server installation). This means, do not use the free user certificates from Comodo; as nice as those may be, Comodo has been removed from the Trusted Root CA entries for good (and rightfully so). Any Mumble client trying to connect with such a user certificate will be denied access (even by public mumble servers) because of the untrusted Root Certificate Authority.
The Solution? Use Mumble's Certificate Wizard (Configure / Certificate Wizard) and create a self-signed user certificate:
Select "Create a new certificate" Enter Name and Emailaddress to be referred to in the certificate. Click "Next" until the new user certificate has been created. Remember to export the newly create user certificate to a safe location in case you want to reuse it after a major computer catastrophe ;-) .. use a password!
It still doesn't work? Good luck. Message me your solution (using the form below) when you find out how.
